Roads to You: Celebration of One World—May 8-19, 2006
We organized the Washington, DC, leg of the inaugural Roads to You International Musicians’ Assembly tour, a group of 30 college musicians founded by Jordanian composer and pianist Zade. The musicians, half foreign students and half American, included young adult musicians from Tunisia, Iran, Turkey, Canada, the UK, China, Malaysia, Mexico and elsewhere. The Assembly’s month-long tour to DC, Houston and Los Angeles, using music to combat cultural ignorance and intolerance, promoted respect for diversity.
To increase direct cross-cultural interaction, we organized home stays with families in the Washington, DC, area for all of the musicians during their visit. In addition to full orchestral performances, the members formed small groups of four to six musicians playing music from all around the world, and, working with Class Acts Arts and other local groups, we arranged for them to visit various schools, community centers and places of worship in order to share this marvelous musical diversity.
Close to 4,000 people experienced the Roads to You tour during the two weeks they were in Washington, DC, including First Lady Laura Bush and Queens Rania & Noor of Jordan.
